The membership of the BETR Board is set out below. In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding on Training Co-regulation, three of the BETR members are independent and three are from the broadcasting industry. The BETR board members are part-time.
The overall independence of the BETR is underpinned by appropriate industry and independent representation and expertise.
Stephen Whittle - is the Chair of BETR. Stephen Whittle was Controller of Editorial Policy at the BBC from 2001 to 2006 and before that Director of the Broadcasting Standards Commission. His career spans programme production, journalism and training. He is a visiting fellow at the Reuters Institute of Journalism at Oxford University, a member of the board of the Solicitors Regulation Authority and a member of the Governing Body of the General Medical Council. He is also expert adviser to the Council of Europe on media issues. He was awarded an OBE for services to broadcasting in 2006.
Peter Block - Until taking up the post of CEO of the BETR Peter managed a global department in the Business Consulting Services of IBM. Prior to IBM, he held several posts in PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting including that of Principal Consultant in the Entertainment & Media Practice. He is visiting Fellow in Media Management at the University of Hertfordshire Business School and a Governor of Oaklands College of Further Education.
Peter began his career in broadcasting as a trainee at Thames TV. He worked as a studio engineer, then freelance sound engineer and production manager. He went on to be an owner/manager of three production companies specialising in location recording, computer graphics and post production. He established and managed a BA and MA in Media Management at West Herts College. His academic text "Managing in the Media" was written to support these programmes.
Craig Jones MBE - Independent Member - joined Barclays Wealth as Global Head of Diversity in May 2008. His move into financial services follows a 20 year career in the Royal Navy.
Between 2000 and 2008 he led groundbreaking work to help integrate gay men and women in the Armed Forces and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2006 for service to equality and human rights. He continues to work closely with the Michael D Palm Centre of the University of California Santa Barbara in the campaign for a more inclusive personnel policy for the US Armed Forces.
At Barclays he has led a strongly commercial diversity agenda which focuses upon developing diverse teams for a growing diversity of clients.
In addition to his role at Barclays he has worked as the principal advisor on equality in the Armed forces to the Equality and Human Rights Commission and is a Board Member and Trustee of Employers Forum on Disability. He was also a founding member of the Prison Service Race Equality Board and is a current member of the Department of Work and Pensions Ethnic Minority Advisory Group.
Enid Rowlands - Independent Member - is an experienced public and not for profit sector Chair and Board Member. She is currently a member of the General Medical Council and a Board member of Consumer Focus. She has a Non Executive Advisory role with Information Commissioner’s Office and is Trustee for Wales for the RNID.
Enid has held posts as Chair of the North Wales Health Authority and of the National Council of Education & Learning Wales and served as a member of the S4C Television Authority and the BBC's Broadcasting Council for Wales. As an Executive she worked as Chief Executive of a Training and Enterprise Council, Managing Director of the Welsh Development Agency in North Wales. She has been involved in education and training throughout her career
Other Board or Advisory appointments have included, UK Training Standards Council, the Prince's Trust Council for Wales, British Telecommunications & Equal Opportunities Commission's Committees for Wales and member of Ministerial working group on Work Life Balance. She is a fluent Welsh speaker and lives in North Wales.
Marcia Williams - Independent Member - Marcia is an equalities and diversity specialist with fifteen years experience working with both the public and private sectors, and currently leading her own diversity services consultancy. Marcia has held a number of senior appointments in the equalities field: Head of Diversity at the UK Film Council, Head of Diversity at HM Treasury, and Senior Policy Advisor, Equality and Diversity at the Law Society of England and Wales. Marcia qualified as a barrister, and is an active member of the General Council of the Bar's Equality and Diversity Committee.
Deborah Baker - Industry Member (Cable & Satellite) - is Director for People at BSkyB . She leads Sky's HR team including organisation and people development, talent resourcing and management, and HR services including health and safety, wellbeing and delivery.
Deborah joined Sky from Burberry where she was Senior Vice President, Human Resources Worldwide, responsible for all HR issues across the group, including licensing, wholesale, retail, franchising, manufacturing and distribution. Prior to this she held senior HR positions at Booker, Laura Ashley, Signet Group and Grand Metropolitan.
Andy Doyle - Industry Member (Terrestrial TV) -- joined ITV in 2007, from the construction and support services industry. Never having worked in the media sector before, he now leads all of ITV’s HR activity, with a key focus on supporting the company through a period of massive structural change.
Throughout his career, Andy has supported and led organisations in delivering significant change and has extensive experience in developing solutions that have driven real commercial value. He has held both HR and General Management roles in both the UK and internationally, in sectors as diverse as leisure retailing, technology, construction and real estate.
Andy is a graduate of Loughborough University, a Chartered Director and a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD.
Natasha Maw - Industry Member (Radio) - is Programme Manager for Radio Training at the BBC Academy. Previously, she worked in network radio at the BBC as a factual producer on programmes such as 'Start the Week', 'In Our Time' and 'Woman's Hour'. Before joining the BBC, she ran her own independent production company, working as a presenter and producer, and won the 1999 Race and Media Awards for best documentary feature. Natasha has worked in the commercial sector, helping to set up VIVA radio in the mid-nineties. She has also worked in the arts sector as a consultant and was involved in establishing a theatre school in South West Ireland for actors and writers and an opera project for schools in South West England. She is a qualified Executive Coach and works as a mentor within and outside the BBC. She currently sits on the Skillset Radio Skills Council and chairs the Radio Academy Radio Skills and Diversity Forum.
