Role of the Advisory Panel

The Advisory Panel ("the Panel") has been convened to provide advisory support to the work of the BETR on the co-regulation of relevant broadcasters' arrangements in respect of Equal Opportunities (EO) as set out in section 337 of the Communications Act 2003. It will meet periodically but not less than annually. It is envisaged that the Panel will provide a valuable resource of specialist knowledge and guidance to the BETR as it develops the approach to EO co-regulation.

The key role is to represent the interests of special interest stakeholders to ensure that the co-regulatory model of EO takes into consideration views expressed by these stakeholders.

Responsibilites

As the EO work is developed the BETR will convene the Panel and gather insights and recommendations. The remit of the Panel will be to:

Membership

The membership of the Panel is drawn from stakeholder groups representing the interests of women, disabled people and people from ethnic minorities in the broadcasting sector. Marcia Williams, former Head of Diversity at the UK Film Council and Independent Board member of the BETR, is chair. The panel membership is not limited to the groups as listed below; representatives from other appropriate stakeholder groups may be invited to join as may appear appropriate to the BETR.

Timescales

This Panel will remain in place and meet regularly to provide advice and support to the BETR EO work.
