Working with you to build a skilled and diverse workforce
One of the fundamental aspects of the work of the BETR, indeed the main reason for its inception, is to ensure that broadcasters provide relevant, inclusive and cost-effective training and development opportunities to its employees. Our focus is on working with broadcasters. By being in a position to look at the total picture, we can identify common challenges, help share good practice and encourage improvement. Although the reporting process itself is on an annual basis, the BETR works with broadcasters throughout the year to provide support and guidance. This guidance enables them to maximise their people development, which consequently enhances the provision of high quality services to audiences and shareholders and supports the long-term success of a valuable, world-leading UK industry.
Underpinning our Training & Skills co-regulatory role is the industry self-evaluation process, coupled with the validation exercise. In 2009, in response to broadcasters’ feedback, we revised the form and implemented an online version, supported by an online Guidebook: www.ldinbroadcasting.co.uk/gb
The self-evaluation return requires each broadcaster to reflect on their performance and achievements over the previous year. Self-evaluation has provided a universal assessment tool by which broadcasters can benchmark their performance against others in the industry. The reporting process and the benchmarking exercise have enabled companies to see how they measure up against industry norms and high performers, encouraging improved performance. There is an open access version of the new online reporting tool available at www.ldinbroadcasting.co.uk/se
Each year validation visits are conducted on a number of broadcast companies by the BETR, in partnership with a team of independent L&D Consultants. This provides the opportunity to assess the state of training in the industry, share best practice and make constructive suggestions for improvement
